boiling the milk by srila prabhupada

Vivek - April 3, 2007 10:37 pm

I want you leaders especially to become absorbed in the philosophy of Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, and become yourselves completely convinced and free from all doubt. On this platform you shall be able to carry on the work satisfactorily, but if there is a lack of knowledge or if there is forgetfulness, everything will be spoiled in time. So especially you must encourage the students to read our books throughout the day as much as possible, and give them all good advice how to understand the books, and inspire them to study the things from every point of view. Better to boil the milk very vigorously and make it thick and sweet – that is the best progress. So let us concentrate on training our devotees very thoroughly in the knowledge of Krishna consciousness from our books, from tapes, and by discussing always, and in so many ways instruct them in the right propositions.

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Founder-Acharya : ISKCON

(International Society for Krishna Consciousness)

In his letter to Hamsaduta, 22nd June, 1972.

All Glories to the boiling of the Bhakti milk!!!

I think that alot of people have a unhealthy view that all the problems within ISKCON will be solved through outreach. Build bigger temples, sell more books, make more devotees. This is all fine and good if simultaneously the foot-soldiers of this method have the time to introspect and identify their motives and their ideal. It seems easy in a fast paced distribution lifestyle to forget that those activities don't necessarily mean you have bhakti. And secondly there must be a healthy introspective compassionate atmosphere for all these "new people" to enter into. Otherwise progressively things will become more and more about the physical process, in the name of bhakti.

^I don't know why I always think I have something worthwile to say to the Tattva Viveka community.^

And speaking of unhealthy, there developed in the '80s a rather nasty idea of what it meant to boil the milk. Some of ISKCON's leaders then suggested that it meant "boiling off" those devotees who weren't with their program.

I think that your comment here, and your others as well, show that there's a good reason for you to think so. Don't go getting shy on us! :)
