9 Islands in Navadwip

Jason - May 16, 2007 2:10 pm

In a lecture of Maharaja's, on the 2nd chapter of Bhagavad-Gita, he briefly speaks about the 9 islands of Nadia and their correlation to the 9-fold expressions/limbs of bhakti. He explained that Godruma represents kirtanam. He brought this up to elaborate on another point, but I was wondering what each of the other islands represented and/or where could I read about this further? There was a specific story regarding the island of Godrum, so I was wondering if there were stories related to the other islands?

BTW, it was a really sweet class where GM explains the supremacy of practice/example over precept. Krsna gave precepts in Bhagavad-Gita, but the CC details the life of Krsna as a practitioner. Subsequently, Nadia embodies Mahaprabhu's practice, where he experienced gopa-lila.

A good place to learn more about the 9 islands is in Thakur Bhaktivinoda's Navadvipa Dhama Mahatmya.

This is the list of islands from Jaiva-dharma: “Navadvipa-dhama is spread over thirty-two square miles in the form of an eight-petal lotus flower. Each of the eight petals represent a dvipa, an island. The eight islands that are represented by the eight petals of the lotus are known as (1) Simantadvipa, (2) Godrumadvipa, (3) Madhyadvipa, (4) Koladvipa, (5) Rtudvipa, (6) Jahnudvipa, (7) Modadrumadvipa, and (8) Rudradvipa. In the middle of these eight islands is the ninth island, the seed-vessel of the lotus, known as Antaradvipa. Sri Mayapura is in the centre of this Antaradvipa."

Thank you both....I'll see if Krishna Culture has the book. I was working on a paper on geography's impact on certain aspects of Native American spirituality; then I heard GM talk about Navadwip in such a way.... Much appreciated :Applause:
