CHANTING

Joseph Rael - July 18, 2007 11:20 am

I CHANT DAILY , BUT I CAN'T ALWAYS CHANT EARLY MORNING HOURS.

WHEN I CHANT DURING THE DAY IT LIKE LULLS ME INTO A SLEEP MODE.

HAS THIS HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSE?

If you are falling asleep, walk while you chant. Also, make sure you are getting enough sleep at night. It could be that the time of day you are chanting is your "sleepy" time of day and not the best time to try and chant. These are just practical considerations, but really, the more you focus on the mantra the less drowsy you will be. Sleep is only possible when you are distracted.

I like to chant while standing or sitting in front of the deities' picture on our little altar at home. Sometimes I really need the visual help to keep me focused. But, as Madan has pointed out, if you haven't had enough sleep, it is going to be very difficult. I usually avoid chanting on japa beads during «la hora tonta» (the siesta time in the afternoon after a meal). I remember Guru Maharaja telling me to do kirtan if I can't focus enough to chant japa. Singing out loud, playing guitar, mrdunga or karatalas is very enlivening!
