Swami's Blog

Vrindaranya Dasi - September 24, 2007 2:14 am

Guru Maharaja has a blog on the new website. I signed up to get announcements whenever a new blog comes out but I haven't received any. Has anyone else had this problem?

Radhanama Dasa - September 24, 2007 2:20 am

I get them on my RSS feed, if that's any help.

Syamasundara - September 24, 2007 3:28 am

Good question. I know and understand the concept of a feed, but for months its science has escaped me. Every time I click on the RSS button to get the feed, I am presented with options that I don't even know what they are. In this case, I just wanted to get a feed whenever Swami has a new blog entry. I click... and get lost.

So far I've had success only with my friends' myspace pages, because you subscribe to a blog just by clicking on a link that takes care of everything.

I've adde the RSS feed to my Google home page. No problems.

Syamasundara - September 24, 2007 4:55 am

I am glad for you.

What should I do, though, to get an email every time someone updates their blogs? Or I haven't even understood how a feed works? Do I have a google homepage thing that I am not aware of?

HOW DOES IT WORK?

If you have a Google account or a Gmail address, you can add content to your personal Google homepage, unoriginally entitled iGoogle. I kid you not. Point your browser to http://www.google.com/ig and log into your Google account (same as Gmail) to customize the page. There are a bunch of websites/applications that can keep track of your feeds. Just Google "aggregators" or "RSS aggregators."

I had a similar problem get the email update feature to work on my GM's website. Couldn't really figure it out when I used Movable Type and couldn't figure it out when I used WordPress.

Vrindaranya, where did you sign up to receive email updates? I don't recall installing that on GM's blog... I could though.

For those of you who don't know what RSS is, watch this short video: http://www.commoncraft.com/rss_plain_english

I personally use Google Reader to keep up with a number of websites. (To answer a question you had a while ago Syamasundara, that's how I come across news)

the store has an RSS feed too btw.

Vrindaranya Dasi - September 24, 2007 9:54 pm

I can't find it now, but I swear I signed up for it at one point! Are you sure you didn't remove this feature?

Syama Gopala Dasa - September 25, 2007 6:01 pm

I haven't changed anything about the layout/tools since I first finished it. But would you like the feature? Downside would be a box on the left.

Or perhaps someone could just mention it here on TV whenever there is a new entry in Swami's blog? That might be the easiest way to do this.

Syama Gopala Dasa - September 26, 2007 8:07 pm

RSS is much easier. No human intervention, all automation.

First time I read this I thought Brigu wanted notices to be on Finnish televsion.

Syamasundara - September 27, 2007 5:00 am

:blush::rolleyes:

I should have expected that, but it still makes me laugh. So many abbreviations, Americans are the best at this, too.

Bhrigu - September 27, 2007 5:21 am
 But I consider putting them on Finnish television an acceptable option.
