24 hour kirtan Gaura Purnima

Madan Gopal Das - February 17, 2008 4:53 pm

Dear prabhus,

Guru Maharaj has said that he likes the idea of a 24 hour kirtan starting Friday (Vyasa Puja) night at midnight and continuing until Saturday (Gaura Purnima) midnight. I am posting below a schedule and would like anyone (2-3 is preferable) who would like to take a shift to sign up. I will fill in anything that is left over and will likely participate in many other shifts. Please reply in this thread by selecting a time (marked by :D) you would like to be responsible for.

What could be a better service opportunity than to honor guru and gauranga by chanting the mantra guru has passed on to us, and with humble hearts, beckoning the descent of Gaura on his purnima??

Thanks Vivek and Shyam! And the hardest to fill times no less!!! Okay, who is a kirtan addict out there who is holding out? All that is required is sraddha matra, just a little faith and then Nitai awards the topmost bliss... If you think you can't sing or play an instrument, but feel some enthusiasm for nama sankirtana, SIGN UP!! This is a great opportunity to learn, put forward your faith and enthusiasm and receive that paramananda! Sales pitch over... Just don't want anybody to forget - :P

Prema-bhakti - February 20, 2008 3:12 pm

I am up for one of the early mornings or late nights or whenever if Gaurangi priya wants to play harmonium and lead or Krsangi, Tadiya or Braja Sundari for that matter. We could be like those wailing old ladies in Vrndavan.

Where's Caitanya-daya when you need her? :P

Syama Gopala Dasa - February 20, 2008 5:18 pm

Keep the sales pitch up, Madan Gopal. You don't want people to forget about this service opportunity. I'll be there depending on what GM or the TC demands from me.

I`m good in wailing but do not expect me to play any instrument :P

Babhru Das - February 20, 2008 9:14 pm

I haven't signed up yet because I expect to be there as part of the staff, and I'll have to see what service I'll have.

Prema-bhakti - February 20, 2008 10:15 pm

There's always time to participate in some kirtana, right TC? :P

Totally! We definitely need a Caitanya Sangha wailing ladies slot!!! I can't wait. I don't know what time though.

Do you ladies know how to ululate like muslim women? :) GM likes when the Vaisnavis ululate at topic moments during the kirtan. I mean, it's a well established hindu custom in Northern India, too, by now. So, start practicing.

Also, I think we should record all the 16 hours or so of kirtans, aratis, abhisekha, then we'll make a CD out of it. I am not much in the know, are there digital recorders with hours and hours of capacity these days?

I believe iPods have a mic attachment, maybe someone can be in charge with two of these trinkets, and when one is full, they turn the second one on and run to empty out the iPod into some computer, and so on. Well, they can walk if they want.

Hah! I just saw on my iTunes that 16 hours of music occupy roughly less than 2GB only!! :P Piece of cake then, it can be done with the stupidest of iPods, if someone has the mic. I believe one of the Poles has it.

Also, besides the acoustics of the temple room, is there going to be any kind of sound/microphone system? It wouldn't be nice to have hours and hours of just piercing karatalas on mp3.

Here's a sample of ululating Bengali women, only, it was a big, blonde, devotee in Eugene, that came out of the woodwork on Nityananda Trayodasi '99, but boy, was she an ululator... :P

You know, not to be a backseat driver, more like a cheerleader, but it would be wonderful if to mark the end of our untogetherness, and make even more of a statement this upcoming Gaura Purnima we had our own Audarya songbook.

Maybe we are still in time to make a dummy version, without GM's purports to the songs, but at least we'll have books that have the same songs on the same page. It's so despiriting to have devotees share books in 3s, struggling to find the page number in the dark, it becomes such a major production that takes away from the flow of bhava. Let alone that some only have a vague idea of what each song says.

I believe I brought that up in the past for another event, and somebody bought a bunch of Iskcon's Vaisnava Songbooks of the same edition, but my point is broader. Imagine having a book with the songs that are dearest to us, including Sridhara Maharaja's or GM's, our pranama mantra, GM's purports.

Actually now that I remember, there is a songbook that is more like a couple of sheets bound, but that is strictly the songs that only we sing during the daily temple program, and that's good, but suppose someone wants to chant the dalalera gita and then a song by Narottama dasa thakura? Back to looking for the right book or folder, giving one copy to GM, finding the page for the others, etc, etc.

Anyway, I realize there is not much time left; I'd be surprised if we could actually get the flag together, but we can still do it. I wish I had the necessary agility on the computer to take care of all that myself: layout, fonts, diacritics, but we would still need GM's purports.

I find ululating to be the most irritating sound in India ever present but then maybe I will be denied krsna prema. I have to start liking the sound ;)

Krishna loves your honesty more than your ululating. ;)

It's inauspicious if it's a man doing it anyway.
