Reading room

Jason - March 9, 2008 4:38 pm

I thought I remembered reading on here somewhere about the possibility of turning the current temple room (in the main building) into a reading room once everything is migrated to the new temple. Is that correct?

I have an extremely large collection of books and no room to house them anymore. I'm keeping the essentials, but was thinking about donating the rest to Audarya if such a library was to be created.

Thats all.

xo,

Oh right! I was thinking about that, too, the other day.

Years ago, the idea was that, when GM has his cottage, and GN their temple, that building would be a multimedia room, with videos, tapes, books... and a kitchen.

I'm really into used book shopping and I always come across cool stuff that I feel I need to "liberate" from their dusty shelves. I would like to contribute if this is still something that was being considered. If it is, I will pack things up and bring them when I come up for the festival.

Oh... I don't know how much of an eclectic book room they had in mind. I thought mostly a gaudiya one.

that's what I'm talking about.....about a hundred or so Gaudiya books.

Hehe, seems like we need our local Svarupa Damodara to go through this offering and select appropriate titles. I remember how several years ago I’ve decided to share a book of Mirabai with Vrindaranya. Her eyes became big, she put her hands behind her back and told me – “We don’t read these books”. I was puzzled, but later understood it perfectly. Keeping bhava at high pitch requires filtering of sensual input, only appropriate things are allowed.

Uh, it's good that there's life beside philosophy.

What about encyclopaedias and reference books? Books about gardening, arts, crafts ...?

You can never find sufficient info about some art on the internet, for example. Nothing beats a good reference book.

Jason,

I guess I was being naive and when I read used book shopping I automatically excluded that it could be gaudiya books, because, who could possibly get rid of them?

That seems an unusual reaction of her, despite the reason for refusing.

Reaction is unusual but I guess she may have been different to somebody who was new to GV.

The latest plan is that Guru Maharaja will make that room into his office and the current pantry into his library possibly. He's been in tight quarters for years and now he'll have a whole little house. As far as donating books, you'll have to ask GM. Chances are he's got most of them :(

I guess I should have been more clear. Well, I'm glad to hear GM will have some more space. I'll just hold off on bringing the books. I do need to part ways with them soon though. I'm running out of room.

Thanks.

If you wind up needing a place for them to go, just let me know what you got and I may be able to help you. :(
