Primary names of God?

Shyamananda Das - April 25, 2010 8:32 pm

Dandavats,

I have heard Swami speak about primary and secondary names of God and that it is the primary names that Sri Chaitanya speaks about in the second verse of the Siksastakam. Primary names are names that involves names of Krishna's devotees, e.g. Yasodanandana. But aren't the maha mantra then consisting of secondary names? Why do we spend more time chanting secondary names than primary?

Is it because we should first develop a general appreciation for the name of God, and then it will be revealed to us exactly what primary names we should chant to develop a specific relationship?

There are many different ways to think about the names of the mahamantra. I cant recall and probably have not heard them all, but Rama can be thought to refer to Balarama (as opposed to Ramachandra) and also Radha-ramana, making it a primary name. Hare is the vocative form of Hara, which refers to Radharani taking away the mind and heart of Krishna. And Krishna, while sometimes thought of as the avatar of Vishnu, for us obviously takes us to Vraja where Bhagavan is most intimately tied to his devotees. This is one way to understand that they are all primary names, but there are others.

Here is a good article about it all, especially towards the end with Jiva Goswamis explanation of each of the sixteen names (all in a primary way).

Yasodananda is Krsna. His first name is Krsna. Rama and Krsna are not secondary names nor is Hari. Secondary names refer to Gods work in this world, such as Creator. Brahman is also secondary as is Paramatma. Krnsa is the one who stands next to Radha. Can't get more primary than that!
