"According to the degree of our self-abnegation in self-surrender we will be benefited, and the specific characteristics of santa-, dasya-, sakhya-, vatsalya-, or madhura-rasa will develop, and there are also subdivisions within these rasas. In this way, the devotee will be properly located. But without saranagati, all the formal practices will lose their life and will become something other than bhakti, either in the plane of exploitation or the plane of renunciation; but the plane of dedication is the land of devotion."
