Searching for Madhumangala

Igor - August 9, 2005 8:36 pm

In Caitanya Caritamrta we can find descriptions about many devotees that appeared to help Lord Gaurasundara and Nitaycandra in their divine pastimes. We can see that all spiritual world appeared to take part in Gaura-lila and Krsnadas Kaviraj Goswami gave us very detailed descriptions.

He also, specifically, noticed twelve very dear followers of Sri Nityananda Prabhu and thoose twelve devotees in Gaura lila are Krsna's most confident friends from Krsna lila ? priya narma sakhas. In his commentaries A.C.Bhaktivedanta Srilla Prabhupada used Gaura-Ganodesa-dipika and gave us further explanations about who is who from Gaura lila in Krsna-lila.

But where is Krsna?s dear friend Madhumangala?

I did not found in Caitanya-Caritamrita, nor in Gaura-ganodesa-dipika anything about Madhumangala?s appereance in Gaura lila, so it is very interesting. Madhu is Krsna?s dear friend and his example is unique. What to say more when Srila Prabhupada expressed his deepest hearth desires in the mood of Madhumangala:

'O My dear friend Krsna, it is certain that you will attain piety if Radha is pleased with you.'

?I simply want to go to Krsnaloka, so I can have some of Krsna's laddu and kachauris. I do not have any great diversion from this. I simply want to go there so that I can enjoy eating laddus and kachauris with Krsna and the cowherd boys. Oh, 'If you will give me laddus and kachauris, then I will bless you.'"

In Sanga ?Krsna-sakti, Prabhupada's sakti? Swami explained Prabhupada?s hearth desire ?Here Prabhupada states his aspiration, and in the last sentence he imitates Krsna's intimate friend Madhumangala, who is a vidusakha (joker friend), and who is sometimes classified as a priyanarma sakha as well.?

?As I mentioned the above notes on Prabhupada's poem are based on the realization of Om Visnupda Srila Bhakti Raksaka Sridharadeva Maharaja, who explained the poem in this way several times. He was of the opinion that Prabhupada was situated in sakhya rasa.?

So. Madhumangala?s position is so unique that Prabhupada had that desire ? ?Oh, 'If you will give me laddus and kachauris, then I will bless you.? but ( as far as I know ) nor Gaura-ganodesa-dipika nor Caitanya Caritamrita mentioned nothing about who is Krsna's funny brahmana friend, Msdhu, in Gaura-lila. That is very interesting because Madhumangala is really Krsna?s treasured and very special friend so I am supposing that he would not be missing all the fun of sankirtana mission of Lord Gauranga?

Maybe there are some verses or some lilas that can give us more light about this very interesting topic. :P

?Once we are together, brother, I will once more feel the happiness of wandering all day long, grazing the cows. I pray for the day to come when we chase each other and wrestle in every one of Vrindavan's forests.?

:D

1 The dvadasa gopalas are not all priyanarma sakhas

2. Narada Muni is a partial incarnation of Madhumangala, and he appeared as Srivasa Thakura in Gaura-lila.

Srivasa reveals himself here:

suni’ premävese nrtya kare sriniväsa

kaksa-täli bäjäya, kare atta-atta häsa

"Srivasa Thakura then began to dance in ecstatic love. He vibrated sounds by slapping his armpits with the palms of his hands, and he laughed very loudly" (Madhya 14.230
