We now have two cows milking and before the end of the year we will have two more. That is a fair amount of hand milking. No problem, but unfortunately our cows teats (except for Raga's) are too small to milk effectively with the human hand. Thus we have concluded that we need a small hand milking machine. After thouroughly researching the market we have found only one suitable machine. Here it is:

Hamby Dairy Products

If we can acquire this machine we will be in good shape for production of a wide variety of dairy poducts for Mahaprabhu, hopefully enough to overflow into the community in the form of whole milk cheeses. Any donation will be much appreciated. Unfortunately the maching is not cheap, about $1350. But it is very efficient and will last forever. remeber, there will be more milk ladies as well as the years pass. It seems certain that we will expand more rapidly in terms of milk cows than in terms of milking monastics.

Bijay, that was an amazing, inspiring response!

I heard something on NPR recently about the differences the varieties of cows have on the qualities of cheese made from their milk. It was framed as a sort of lament about the dominance of Holsteins in America's dairies. This made me remember the milk I bought from Sadananda when I lived in San Diego. Sadananda is a miniature zebu fanatic, and the milk I bought from him during those years was unlike anything I've ever had--richer and sweeter than even any fresh milk we had when we lived on Maui in the mid '70s, or that I've bought from anyone else anywhere. Here on the Big Island, Dayal Chandra cares for several dozen cows, but he experiments with breeding across the breeds, including his zebus. His milk is quite wonderful, but nothing like the pure mini zebus. I can imagine how wonderful this cheese will be.

Maybe Guru Maharaja has starting something the could swell in to a very fine niche market. It seems it would have an unlimited capacity for expansion. I can not wait to taste the butter.
